Hybrid Billing

Guide 3 min read

This page explains how Hetzner Data Center Core bills for services across all three families — Cloud, Storage Box, and Dedicated. It is written for administrators who configure product pricing and for anyone reviewing an invoice that includes add-on charges.

The hybrid billing model

Every service uses a fixed plan fee as its base charge — the recurring price (monthly or annual) set on the WHMCS product. On top of that, some families add usage-based add-on charges for resources that go beyond what the plan includes, such as CPU, RAM, or outbound traffic where applicable.

  1. Fixed base plan — the recurring price you set on the WHMCS product. This covers the service itself and any resource allowance included in the plan.
  2. Usage-based add-on / overage fees — charges added automatically when a service's actual usage exceeds its included allowance during a billing period.

Note

Today, automated usage-based overage billing is active for Hetzner Cloud servers (outbound traffic overage). Storage Box and Dedicated Servers currently bill on the fixed plan fee only, with no automated overage charges from the addon.

How overage is calculated (Cloud)

For Hetzner Cloud servers, the addon compares actual outbound traffic against the traffic allowance included in the server's plan:

  • The included traffic allowance is read directly from Hetzner for each server.
  • Usage above the included allowance is billed at a per-GB overage price that the administrator sets on the product.
  • If the overage price is set to 0, no overage is charged and the service bills at the fixed plan fee only.

All traffic is measured in decimal gigabytes (1 TB = 1,000 GB).

How invoices reflect base + overage

  • The fixed plan fee is invoiced through WHMCS's normal recurring billing cycle, the same as any other product.
  • Overage charges, where applicable, are added as a separate billable item once per billing month, so the invoice clearly separates the base plan from usage-based add-on charges.
  • The addon tracks which month has already been billed for each service so a customer is never charged twice for the same period.
  • The billable item description includes a breakdown of usage versus the included allowance, so both the admin and the customer can see exactly why an overage charge was applied.

Tip

Encourage customers to check their service's traffic usage in the client area if they want to avoid surprise overage charges — see the Client Area Overview.

Where to configure billing per product

Usage-based add-on pricing and markup are configured per product, in each family's own settings page:

Family Where to configure
Hetzner Cloud Cloud — Product Settings
Storage Box Storage Box — Settings
Dedicated Servers Dedicated — Settings

Each of these settings pages also covers the markup percentage applied when importing an existing Hetzner resource into WHMCS, which determines the base price suggested for that service.
